Ralph McQuarrie, renomado artista de Star Wars, morreu no sábado, 4 de março, aos 82 anos. Ele sofria de mal de Parkinson, mas a causa da morte não foi divulgada pelo seu site oficial, qua comunicou o falecimento.
McQuarrie começou a trabalhar nos designs de Star Wars antes mesmo do projeto ser batizxado e, em 1975 criou os icônicos designs de Chewbacca e Darth Vader, além de inúmeros conceitos para naves e cenários. Sua arte inclusive ajudou a convencer a 20th Century Fox a apostar em George Lucas, transformando McQuarrie em um dos elementos chaves de uma das mais cultuadas franquias do cinema.

Ralph McQuarrie, famous artist of Star Wars, died on Saturday, March 4, at 82. He suffered from Parkinson's disease, but the cause of death was not disclosed by the official website, Sun announced the death.
McQuarrie began working on the designs of Star Wars even before the project is batizxado and in 1975 created the iconic designs of Chewbacca and Darth Vader, and many concepts for ships and scenarios. His art also helped convince 20th Century Fox to bet on George Lucas, McQuarrie turning into one of the key elements of one of the most worshiped movie franchises.
Beyond his work in the sequences, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, complete with an uncredited appearance as General McQuarrie (in Episode V), the designer worked with Steven Spielberg in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET - the Extra-Terrestrial, creating the concepts for the alien ships, contributed in Raiders of the Lost Ark and won an Oscar in 1986 for the visual effects of Cocoon.
McQuarrie also worked as a consultant and designer concept in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, The Miracle Came from Space and Jurassic Park.
